EXPLORER FIELD NOTES
Each is their own slice of heaven and perfect in kindling your inner journey.
GIBBS FARM, Tanzania
Farm to Table EleganceThis farm is unlike any other farm we have ever visited. It is tucked away amongst lush green rolling hills. It is an actual working, all-organic farm. Thirty acres of coffee, ten acres of fruits and vegetables, five acres of flowers, along with a dairy and pig farm. You can imagine how delicious the farm to table meals are here.
If you had a mind to pen the next Out of Africa novel, this would be a perfect writer’s haven. Though for most, it a lovely respite in-between visiting Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. Or, after visiting the Crater and heading off to the Serengeti.
You could always do both:
Tarangire – Gibbs Farm – Crater – Gibbs Farm – Serengeti
LEMALA AUTHENTIC CAMPS AND LODGES, Tanzania
Isolated wildernesses Meets Sublime ComfortYou could do an entire safari experience just staying at Lamela camps.
Start at Mpingo Ridge Lodge to see the elephants and baobab trees in Tarangire National Park. The room’s daybed is the perfect place for an afternoon nap, in-between your day’s safari.
Go onto their cozy tented camp, set in an acacia forest, about ten minutes into Ngorongoro Crater. This location is excellent for giving you a headstart in the morning to see wildlife because you are already in the Crater, instead of driving to it like most of the other camps in the area.
Enter the Serengeti’s Southern Gate to stay at their Ewanjan Tented Camp — one of our favorite Lemala tented camps. It is in a game-rich area. There are only twelve tents in a spacious area of the bush. The sunsets here are very relaxing because no one else is around.
Venturing further into the Serengeti, move onto Nanukye Tented Lodge with structured tents. The plunge pool that comes with each tent is a welcomed treat after a warm and dusty game drive.
Your Serengeti adventure ends in the north at Kuria Hills Lodge, a classic location in the Lemala collection. When we were there, the area was teeming with wildlife, especially elephants and big cats.
ONE NATURE, Tanzania
Old Explorer Luxury Meets SustainabilityIf you want a luxurious safari experience with an Old English explorer’s vibe, this would be the place, especially if you are a photographer. Everything about this camp was thought about and well-appointed, including their game drive vehicles specially designed for those who want the best angle to capture images of their safari.
One Nature has created a camp experience that combines the best in luxury with ecological sensitivity.
SABI SABI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE, South Africa
One of National Geographic's Unique Lodges of the WorldFounder’s note: I was meant to visit here, then COVID-19 hit. This private game reserve is a place I have heard of for quite some time and was looking forward to finally experiencing it. I had done a limited series for Discovery’s Animal Planet in the general area of Sabi Sabi. The show followed three former Navy SEALS and a Green Beret as they taught rangers in the Greater Kruger Area anti-poaching strategies. While I was near Sabi Sabi, I never made it to the camp. I will get there on my next trip to SA.
Sabi Sabi has been around for forty years and is one of National Geographic’s Unique Lodges of the World. You can imagine how fantastic it would be to visit.
Viceroy Bali
Founder’s note: I first came to Bali when I was utterly off-kilter and in need of a reset. The ridge outside of Ubud, where this family-owned jungle retreat is located, was the antidote for my tired spirit. Perfect for these post-COVID times as well. They have a private helipad so that you can be transported from the airport directly to this slice of Eden.
