Description

Experience two of the most famous and impressive mountain landscapes in Greece, Olympus and the monasteries of Meteora.

The Greek Gods made their home on Olympus, the highest mountain in the country, soaring 9570-feet to the place where Zeus surveyed the world. It is also Greece’s oldest, most treasured national park, and home to the highest concentration of flora and fauna, vast expanses of forest, and the crystal clear waters of the Enippeas River.

The dramatic rocky pinnacles of Meteora with their cliff-top monasteries are a sight to behold. One indeed marvels at the audacity of the monks who first dared to perch simple shelters on the tiny summits. Nowadays, the monasteries are much grander, as well as much more accessible to reach.

The idyllic Island of Alonnisos is also available as an optional excursion.

Skill Level Requirements

Hiking in Mount Olympus is five to six hours per day, depending on your speed. It is mostly forested paths until you get above the tree line. Then, the terrain varies from grassy uplands to rocky ridges with some scrambling required for the peak ascents; Stefani, Skala, and Skolio. A good level of fitness and climbing experience is needed to summit the final peak, Mytikas. However, wherever you end your journey up the mountain of the Gods, it will be an exhilarating challenge.

In Meteora, you walk three to four hours a day on rocky terrain paths to get to the monasteries. There is the option to go by vehicle.

Itinerary Varies based on your desires

  • Day 1 Thessaloniki | Arrive

Upon arrival at Thessaloniki Airport, you will transfer to your hotel. Overnight Daios Hotel.
  • Day 2 Thessaloniki | Litochoro

In the morning, enjoy a guided tour of the city, driving around the White Tower, the Galerius Arch, the Rotunda Monument, and Old Town, from where you will have a fantastic panoramic view of Thessaloniki. During the tour, there will be a stop at Agios Demetrius Byzantine Church, known for its religious, historical, and artistic significance. The most exciting part of the church is its ancient underground Crypt. The Crypt was discovered after a fire in 1917. Then visit the Archaeological Museum which holds artifacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, mostly from Thessaloniki, and the region of Macedonia. After lunch, we transfer to Litochoro in the foothills of Mount Olympus. Overnight Cavo Olympo Resort.
  • Day 3 Litochoro | Refuge Petrostrouga

After breakfast, we transfer to Gkortsia, where your hike begins, at an altitude of 3608 feet. Most of the hike is through a thick forest of pine, beech, and fir trees. End your day at an altitude of 6364 feet. Overnight Refuge Petrostrouga | B, L, D
  • Day 4 Plateau of the Muses | Refuge Ch. Kakkalos

Today, you follow a zig-zagged path that brings you to Plateau of the Muses where a small refuge will accommodate you for the night. This is a day filled with breathtaking scenery. After lunch, if you are up for it, climb the small peaks, Profitis Ilias and Toumba, just above the refuge to take in the views of Mount Olympus' peaks and its deep gorges. Overnight Refuge Ch. Kakkalos | B, L, D
  • Day 5 Peak Ascents | Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos)

From here, depending on your fitness level and weather conditions, there are two options to get to the next refuge. One, ascend along the main path, crossing a spectacular precipice under the peak of Stefani, known as the Throne of Zeus. Two, climb Skala Peak (9455 feet,) crossing a narrow ridge to the summit of Skolio Peak (9550 feet.) The path requires some scrambling. End your day back down at an altitude of 6889 feet. They call the refuge here the Balcony of Greece. You have a leisurely afternoon to rest up for the next day, which will be demanding. Overnight Refuge A (Spilios Agapitos) | B, L, D
  • Day 6 Prionia | Ennipeas Gorge | Litochoro

The last day is along the E4 path (International Path) until Litochoro. After an easy walk, stop at Prionia, one of the highest points that can be reached by car. Later, enter the Enippeas Gorge, passing a cave-chapel and the Monastery of St. Dionysus. Along the way, take a refreshing plunge in the Enippeas River. After about seven hours, the gorge opens up on the outskirts of Litochoro. The route has varied geological features, small lakes with crystal waters and sheer mountain slopes that are indeed a sight to behold. Once in Litochoro, you transfer to your hotel for a relaxing evening. Overnight Cavo Olympo Resort | B, L, D
  • Day 7 Dion | Meteora

Then, head downhill to Kastraki passing by the cave of St. George Mandila, where every year climbers come to hang their scarves. Here, we are treated to a picnic of local delicacies. “I curated this sojourn in memory of my guest’s uncle. The two were close and had wanted to climb Mount Olympus together. However, that never happened while his uncle was still alive. On the fourth anniversary of his uncle’s passing, he finally did the climb, a beautiful memory indeed.”
