Description

This horseback safari offers exceptionally high standards of guiding, service and accommodation, while not compromising on the true nature of being on safari. Experiencing this raw wilderness is what makes safaris so special. Riding up close to elephant, lion and buffalo, or galloping with wildebeest and zebra are life-changing experiences. If you are a rider, there is simply no better way to see Kenya than from the back of a well schooled and fit horse. The Mara never fails to deliver outstanding game viewing from horseback, all year round. Whether you ride with the wildebeest migration from July to October or avoid the masses and opt for the warm, dry months of January to March the game viewing is always spectacular.

Types of horses: well schooled thoroughbred and thoroughbred cross. Many are home bred out of our mares. All are tried for polo and the best polo ponies all go on safari. They are therefore responsive, tough, and fit.

Riding ability: you should be comfortable at all paces and able to gallop out of trouble. We ride in big game country. You should be fit enough to ride between 4-6 hours a day. Weight limit of 210 lbs (95 kgs).

Length of rides: 4-6 hours in the saddle. Picnic lunch is carried in your saddle bag on moving days. 1.5-2 hour lunch stops. Some walking on foot is necessary over rough terrain. Most of the rides in Masai Land are on fairly open plains (block cotton soil) interspersed with bush. They are short grass plains ideal for riding.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 Nairobi

Today you will fly into Nairobi. On arrival, proceed to the arrivals halls where our representative will be waiting with your name on a sign board. Once you connect with your representative, you will be escorted to your vehicle for transfer to your hotel, a drive of approximately 1 hour. Check into your hotel and take some time to relax and settle in. Your time here is at your leisure – whether you’d like to lounge by the pool or venture out to some of Nairobi’s top attractions.
  • Day 2 Maasai Mara Game Reserve

You will be collected from your Nairobi Hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for a 10am schedule flight to Naibosho. It is a beautiful flight passing over the fertile Kikuyu Highlands before reaching the Great Rift Valley. We fly across the volcano studded floor of the Rift before reaching the Loita Hills and Naibosho Air strip. You will be met by your guide and there will be an hour’s drive to camp. We reach our camp in a grove of acacia trees by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains at Olare Lamun (the rhino salt lick) in time for lunch. There will be an evening ride. Overnight Olare Lamun
  • Day 3 Maasai Mara Game Reserve

A full day to explore this remote area with abundant game. Drives, rides and walks may be taken from camp. Overnight Olare Lamun.
  • Day 4 Maasai Mara Game Reserve

Our first moving day and we break camp in good time as it is the longest ride of the trip covering nearly 50kms. We ride across rolling open plains and the game generally becomes more plentiful as we approach the Mara ecosystem. We should see herds of zebra, topi, giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle and there is a good chance of seeing elephant and buffalo as well. We reach our camp on the edge of the Masai Game Reserve on the Olare Orok late afternoon. From camp we are likely to hear lion and hyena at night and the abundance of game is apparent everywhere. Overnight Olare Orok.
