Description

A truly unique experience in Northern Tanzania for those seeking adventure, wanting to get off the beaten track and engage in their environment. This region offers excellent habitat variety, rolling hills, open plains, massive volcanoes, and isolated lakes. On this sojourn, you will step back in time as you follow the ‘early footsteps of man’ from the Ngorongoro Highlands down into Lake Natron, back through the Gol Mountains into the Cradle of Mankind, Olduvai Gorge, and into the plains of the Serengeti. Here you will see and feel what it must have been like when our ancestors first walked in this remote and haunting beautiful area, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 ARUSHA

Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro International Airport you are personally met and transferred to your well-appointed lodge. Overnight Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge (Dinner)
  • Day 2 NGORONGORO

Depart early with a packed lunch, heading towards the Ngorongoro Consevation Area. After some formalities at the gate you drop down into a 2,000ft massive caldera and game drive along the Crater floor. Here you have chances of seeing the Big Five animals including black rhino, if you’re lucky! Enjoy your picnic lunch, and then make your way to your accommodation on the Crater rim. Overnight Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 3 NGORONGORO / EMPAKAI

After breakfast head towards Empakai Crater. There is a hike down to see the flamingoes and explore this lesser visited area where a private camp is set up for you. There is time to freshen up before dinner. (Walking 2-3 hours) Overnight Empakai Expedition Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 4 NGORONGORO / ACACIA

Dawn rises and our lofty position affords a great sunrise. As we take breakfast, our camp crew break camp and depart to send the camp ahead with donkeys. We then set off hiking with Maasai guides following a route that takes us through picturesque Maasai villages and rolling hills. Lunch can be taken on route as a picnic, or if guests are very fit, a late lunch can be had in camp. In the late afternoon a hike up to a nearby viewpoint is highly recommended and a great place for sundowners! (Walking 6-8 hours, 12 miles) Overnight Acacia Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 5 LAKE NATRON

The final section of hiking has two options of a shorter hike or a longer more strenuous option right along the Rift Wall. The views are spectacular with the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai dominating the foreground. This volcano affects almost everything from hydrology to lifestyle, as will become apparent. Once down on the Rift Valley Floor we are picked up and transferred to Lake Natron Camp, Ngare Sero and here have the chance to jump in the natural pools to cool down. Sundowners are served at any number of beautiful points close to camp and the lake. (Walking 6-8 hours, 12 miles) Overnight Lake Natron Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 6 LAKE NATRON

Lake Natron has a number of activities available today. For those who are seeking something mild but adventurous, the nearby Ngare Sero Gorge has a number of hikes to waterfalls, an oasis in the middle of a harsh environment. For those feeling fit and super adventurous, we depart early at 1:00am and transfer to the base of Lengai. The ascent takes around 5 hours to reach the summit where there are stunning views (weather dependent) of the surrounding volcanoes. Often Kilimanjaro is seen away to the east. The descent takes as long as the ascent and once at the base you transfer back to camp for a late lunch and rest. Late afternoon is relaxing and enjoying the scenery. Overnight Lake Natron Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

  • Day 7 GOL / SANJAN

Depart early and transfer over to the edge of the Rift Valley. Here we hike up following trails used by the Maasai to herd their cattle to the rich pastures above. Dawn begins, we are afforded a stunning sunrise over the expansive Rift Valley. Our vehicle meets us at the top and we transfer across the Salei Plains to Sanjan Gorge to our camp. In the heat of the day we rest and in the afternoon meander deep into the Sanjan Gorge with our Maasai guides. (Walking 4-5 hours, 8 miles) Overnight Sanjan Expedition Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 8 GOL / NASERA ROCK

Set off on a walk while the crew breaks down camp, following the line of the Gol Mountains. At a designated spot, we are picked by the vehicle and set off to explore Olkarian Gorge – home to one of the largest Ruppel’s Griffon vulture in Africa. We arrive in camp at Nasera Rock and in the afternoon head on a hike looking for wildlife. There is time to freshen up before dinner. (Walking ranges today 2-6 hours depending on group, split up by a vehicle transfer, 3-5miles) Overnight Nasera Rock Expedition Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 9 NDUTU, SERENGETI

Set off in a vehicle heading towards the Cradle of Mankind, Olduvai Gorge. This is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world and has been instrumental in furthering the understanding of early human evolution. From here we set out towards the Ndutu Plains of the Serengeti, a vast ecosystem that is contiguous with the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Masai Mara in Kenya. Game drive and have a picnic lunch en route to your accommodation. Overnight Ndutu Safari Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 10 NDUTU, SERENGETI

Continue to explore the short grass plains of Southern Serengeti. You will enjoy a game drive in the morning and afternoon with lunch at the lodge (or you can go further afield with packed lunches). Enjoy one last sundowner in East Africa! Overnight Ndutu Safari Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Day 11 ARUSHA

After an early morning game drive and breakfast you transfer to the nearest airstrip to catch a schedule charter flight to Arusha airport. You are transferred to your lodge and have a dayroom to relax in, freshen up, enjoy a meal, and repack before heading to Kilimanjaro International airport for departures.
